Prospecting Arrival: Tyler Straub, 3b, Kansas City Royals

  • Tyler Straub played four seasons of college ball (2013-2016), split between North Central Texas College (North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference) and Texas-San Antonio (Conference USA).
  • He was a very good hitter in college. His senior year he hit .282/.342/.366 with 2 HR. It should be noted that most of those numbers were actually career lows, which says more about how good he hit through his collegiate career than anything else.
  • Unfortunately, he was not drafted in 2016. But someone was watching: the Royals signed him as a nondrafted free agent.
  • He started his career out in Burlington (Rookie) and hit really well: .270/.381/.320. The OBP was really nice, though the lack of power was something to watch.
  • Straub would spend 2017 with Idaho Falls, again in the Rookie League. His numbers were pretty similar to 2016: .278/.362/.416. His ability to get on base was really nice–he had 31 walks to 41 K’s. But one big difference between 2016 and 2017 was he showed some pop, hitting 5 HR.
  • I am not really sure what the plan is moving forward. He is pretty old to go back to Rookie ball, and based on his numbers he really does not have anything to prove there anyway.
  • The Royals would be silly not to start him in A-ball for 2018 and see if the OBP and power hold up against more advanced pitching.
