Bobby Brownlie. He was, for a hot minute, a very big deal.
Back in 2000, Bobby Browline was in his freshman year at Rutgers. He would end up going 10-1 and was selected to the Big East’s All-Conference Team and won Rookie of the Year. He was also the MVP of the Big East Tournament. By early 2002 he was not only one of the greatest players in Rutgers history but the projected #1 draft pick of the 2002 draft.
But, in early 2002, Brownlie suffered a shoulder injury. While Browline would come back after only missing two starts, his fastball and curveball did not. He has a solid 2002 season, but his ERA ticked up almost a full run from the previous season. Teams noticed, and he slid to Cubs with the 21st overall pick of the draft.
Browline would remain a prospect for a couple of seasons in the Cubs organization, but it was clear by 2006 that his arm was not going to return to its Rutgers form. He would spend nine seasons in the minors, getting as far as AAA, before retiring.
Brownlie was, very briefly, with Cleveland. In July 2007 Cleveland purchased his contract from the Indy League Newark Bears. He was sent to AA-Akron and went 1-2 with a 3.17 ERA. The following season struggled with AAA-Columbus (1-3, 7.86) and was released.
