Garrett Cooper was drafted by the Brewers in the sixth round of 2013 draft out of Auburn. He was a decent enough minor league hitter, but as never rated as a Top 30 prospect. Which is weird in retrospect.
In 2017 the Brewers traded him to the Yankees in July 2017 for Tyler Webb. Later that season he would make the majors for the first time, getting 43 at-bats with the Yankees, hitting .326/.333/.488. He stuck out 12 times and only walked once, but overall the numbers were solid.
In November 2017 the Yankees traded Cooper and Caleb Smith to the Marlins for Mike King. 2018 was a lost season for Cooper, who spent most of the season on the injured list for a variety of injuries.
But this season Cooper is healthy and one of the best hitters on the Marlins.
- On the season he is hitting .284/.355/.436 with 10 HR, good for a 110 OPS+
- He is pretty much the best hitter on the Miami roster, with only Brian Anderson carrying a higher OPS+ at 112.
- Cooper also has some defensive versatility, since he can man both first base and right field. And well.
