Luis Escobar was signed as an international free agent by Pirates in July 2013. He made his major league debut earlier this season.
- Over 42.2 innings in AAA he has allowed 36 hits while striking out 46. Good for a 3.59 ERA/1.453 WHIP.
He has always been a strikeout machine: in 2017 he struck out 168 in 131 innings, and in 2018 he had 110 in 128 innings. Control has always been a bigger issue for him, and the one thing holding him back.
He was not overly impressive in his major league debut.
- Over four appearances he pitched 5.2 innings and allowed 10 hits, walking four and striking out two.
He is only 23. And he has an electric arm. He profiles like a middle of the rotation starter or shutdown pen arm. There is lots to like here and the Pirates have no need to rush him.
