This 1998 Fleer Update #U100 J.D. Drew ranked #49 on Beckett’s 2005 All-Time Hot List. In early 1999 there were few cards hotter than JD Drew rookies. This one, from the Fleer Update set, was priced at $30/$45 in the March 1999 issue of Beckett. This was one of his two rookies that were out at the time, the other being from the famous 1998 Leaf Rookies and Stars set. That Leaf issue was even more expensive, listing for $90/$150 in Beckett Bucks.

Drew made the majors in late 1998 and had a 266 OPS+ over 36 at-bats. People who invested in this card were looking good. But he struggled his second season (91 OPS+) before settling into a comfortably above-average (but not quite all-time great) player. He would retire following the 2011 season with a 125 OPS+, 242 career home runs, and only a single All-Star appearance.
