Back in 2016, I drove the two hours from Lake Country to Mahoning Valley to see the Astro’s short-season affiliate play the Scrappers. One of the big reasons I wanted to make the drive to get Stephen Wrenn.
Wrenn was the 6th round pick of the Astro’s out the University of Georgia. Being a college bat there was a certain expectation that he would perform well in Low-A, but he was surpassing even those. There was a real buzz about him, and I was excited to add his autograph to my collection.
He ended his 2018 season in AA, hitting .248/.319/.371 with 9 HR and 44 stolen bases. He has pop and speed–but his strikeouts are still a problem. In 472 at bats he had 138 K’s to only 44 walks.
He is still young and there certainly are intriguing tools. If he can get the K’s under control he could move quickly.
