Back in 2014, I went to my first Division 2 game, Hawaii Pacific v. Azusa Pacific University.
I was after Azusa’s Josh Staumont, who was at the time the #1 prospect in D2 ball and a projected first-round pick. I got him 10 minutes after I showed up. It was great.
After the game, I decided to grab a couple other Azusa guys since so many of them were putting up impressive. One of them was SP Zach Hedges.
Hedges went 5-4 with a 2.74 ERA/1.20 WHIP over 85 innings with Azusa in 2014. He was drafted that June by the Cubs in the 26th round.
He has been a starter for most of his professional career and has put up great numbers in the minors. In 2018 he transitioned to the pen, and while he continues to handle AA hitters with ease, he struggled for the second season in AAA.
He is still only 25, and I am sure he will figure out AAA hitters sooner than later.
