Collection ReCollective: Yoenis Cespedes, of, New York Mets

I had a thing for Cespedes since the day he signed with the A’s. In 2014 I built a vacation around graphing the A’s in Cleveland–their roster was stacked with players that I liked, and they had a reputation as a decent signing team. I figured it would be a fun, productive weekend.

It did not go well. While they might have been ok signers in 2013, in 2014 they were tough. Almost none of the regulars signed over the three days I was in Cleveland. The only chance I had was on the first night when the entire team rode the bus back to the hotel. The problem was…they were moving fast. The kind of fast that you know they are avoiding you. I figured I could call only one guy over. It was a toss-up between Josh Donaldson, Brandon Moss or Cespedes. I pulled the trigger on Cespedes.

He signed. Was nice enough about it. And when a couple more people came over the signed for them and even took some pictures.

Cespedes has a couple rough seasons because of health issues, but I am hoping that he will back to full strength at some point in 2019. The Mets…could use a break of good luck.
