From the Collection: Dave Roberts, if, Yakult Atoms

Dave Roberts–this Dave Roberts, not the Dodgers manager–had a very interesting career. Roberts, a Panamanian outfielder/first baseman, started his career with the Porterville Comets of the Southwest International League in 1952, and over the next 22 seasons would play in the minors, Major League Baseball, and a nice stint in Japan. His time in Japan was particularly impressive; from 1967-1963 he hit .275/.362/.524 with 183 HR and was named to at least three All-Star teams.

Another season worth pointing out: in 1965, with AAA Pacific Coast League Oklahoma 89ers, he hit .319 with a .428 OBP and 38 HR. It is still one of the best seasons in team history. And he was 32 at the time.

It’s worth pointing out that Roberts was in the Baltimore minor league system early in his career. He was a fantastic young hitter and in many organizations would have been moved quickly up the minor league ladder. While major league baseball was technically integrated by 1954, some organizations were still struggling with developing minority players. There is a reason he spent three seasons in AA with the San Antonio Missions. In fact, at one point, he was demoted back to Class-A ball because one of the opposing teams in the league didn’t want to play against black ball players.
