Fausto Carmona–or Roberto Hernandez, however you want to remember him–did not have a particularly impressive career. Over 11 seasons he went 71-99 with a 4.60 ERA/89 OPS+. He was selected to one All-Star game, in 2010.
But there will always be 2007. That season Carmona went 19-8 with a 3.06 ERA/148 ERA+. He pitched 215 innings, striking out 137. In the 2007 ALDS he pitched a thee-hitter against the Yankees, striking out five and winning the deciding game of the series. Of course, in the two games he pitched in the ALCS he was destroyed (16.50 ERA!) by Boston. But whatever! Overall, it was a great season, and the Indians awarded the “23-year old” Carmona with a four-year, $15 million deal that offseason.
Of course, things did not pan out. He was never again as nearly effective as he was during the 2007 season, and it would eventually come out that he was three years older then he was telling people. Not great. but still, we will always have that 2007 season.
