J.B. Wendelken was drafted by the Red Sox in the 13th round of the 2012 draft out of Middle Georgia College.
He has been part of two trades since then. In 2012 he was part of a three-team, six-player trade that saw him sent to the White Sox (the Red Sox got, among other things, Jake Peavy in that deal).
Two years later he was shipped to Oakland in a smaller trade that netted the White Sox Brett Lawrie.
Wendelken missed the 2017 season due to Tommy John surgery.
He spent most of 2018 in AA and AAA and pitched very well coming out of the pen, allowing only 40 hits and striking out 75 in 48.2 IP. This pitching earned him a call to the big leagues. Over 16.2 innings he only allowed 8 hits while striking out 14. He only walked 5 batters.
He was always projected to be a pen arm, and that looks exactly like what he will be coming into 2019. He is a very exciting prospect.
This was another card from a late-season consignment.
