From the Field: Judah Ota, of, Iolani Varsity Baseball

Trying to figure out which prep players are legit prospects can be tough. Luckily, baseball scouts are paid to make these determinations, and I lean on them to point me toward the next Maui Ahuna, Kala’i Rosario, or Caleb Lomavita. Generally, my rule of thumb is that I shoot for players who are in the Perfect Game Top 500 and/or committed to a D1 program. All these things are signs of success at the D1 and professional levels.

With sophomore Judah Ota (@ota.judah), neither of those boxes is checked…yet. But that should change very soon. He is easily one of the most exciting prospects in Hawaii, and is putting up numbers this season to prove it: .383 average with 2 HR. He is one of the reasons Iolani is atop their division standings (10-4). Of course, I hope he ends up playing for Hawaii, but I suspect plenty of top-tier mainland D1 schools will be calling, and it’ll be tough keeping his talent on Oahu.
