Starting pitcher Luke Short is a junior with the St. Edward’s Hilltoppers, a D2 team in the South Central Region. In 2022 he had some rough surface numbers as a starter, with a 4-5 record and a 5.74 ERA. But he only allowed 75 hits in 78.1 innings and struck out 98, so there was every reason to think he was ready to have a successful 2023.
..
And sure enough, here we are. In 2023, Short is 7-0 with a 1.96 ERA. He has only allowed 42 hits in 55 innings, striking out 85. Short is clearly one of the better pitchers in D2 this season and a big reason that the Hilltoppers are 26-6. I have to think that teams are looking at him come draft time. And, if Short does get drafted, he would be the first player since 2018, when Tanner Lawson was drafted by the Braves in the 21st round, to be selected from St. Edward’s.
