Tarik Skubal was drafted by the Tigers in the 9th round of the 2018 draft out of Seattle University. He has very good stuff, though injuries in college kept his draft stock depressed. Last season, while in the low minors, he put up very solid numbers in limited action: 22.1 IP, 15 hits allowed, 4 walks and 33 K’s–good for a 1.21 ERA/0.833 WHIP.
This season he has been a starter in High-A and is, again, doing very well: 4-4 with a 2.98 ERA/1.025 WHIP over 66.1 innings. He has only allowed 50 hits while striking out 83. He only has 18 walks on the year. Very nice numbers.
He did not crack the Fangraphs Top 26 prospect list but was a prospect of note in the end. I imagine if he keeps pitching like he is we will see his name on the main list in 2020.
