Yandy Diaz was a 2b/3b while in Cuba, but since coming to the states he has played almost exclusively at third. Teams would love to have a prospect like him ready to come to the majors except…the Indians…have a bit of a logjam.
The Indians have a very real MVP contender manning the hot corner in Jose Ramirez. At second that have Jason Kipnis, who is having a rough season but is a veteran with a track record of success–and a big contract. You can’t just bench him.
Yandy simply does not have a place to play. The DH/1b spot is already being held down by Edwin Encarnacion and Yonder Alonso. You don’t really want to move Ramirez anyplace except second, and if you did that then you have no place for Kipnis. Nobody wants to see Kipnis in the outfield. So don’t ask. But you also don’t want to see Diaz in the outfield, since by all account he is a butcher out there.
This is all extra frustrating since our outfield is a mess, but none of these guys really profile well out there.
