From the (Spring Training) Field: Tim Herrin, p, Cleveland Guardians
…
Cleveland relief pitcher Tim Herrin was drafted in the 29th round of the 2018 draft out of the University of Indiana. He has never been rated in Baseball America as one of Cleveland’s Top 30 prospects, and chances are you’ve never heard of him. So of course, in Cleveland baseball fashion, he is on the verge of breaking camp with the big league club and likely be an important part of the team’s relief corp in 2023.

Herrin looks like yet another example of Cleveland finding a certain type of player and developing them successfully in a way that other organizations might not have been able to do. Guardians assistant general manager James Harris spoke to this recently in an MLB.com article, saying that “We’ve had success [with pitchers]. It starts with our scouting group … [p]eople have identified strike-throwers, guys who have some athleticism, mature bodies who come into our system and are open to partner with us. It’s not a system where it’s like a factory where you come in and we create the same pitcher. It’s one where we partner with a pitcher, help him understand his strengths, and then complement those strengths.”
