Back in 2002, the Indians sent 1B Russel Branyan to the Reds for 1B Ben Broussard. I guess it’s not a great deal for the Indians if you are just counting career WAR (11.2 for Branyan, 4 for Broussard), but Broussard would have a very solid four-year run with the Indians. From 2003-2006 he would average 18 HR and a .330 OBP, good for an OPS+ of 111. He was not flashy, and you probably want your first baseman to have a little more pop, but still. He wasn’t bad.
What else wasn’t bad? When the Indians traded him in 2006 to the Mariners, they got back a young OF prospect names Shin-Soo Choo. So this was a win-win, I think.
