The Philadelphia Phillies drafted outfielder Anthony Gose 51st overall in the 2008 MLB Draft. He was a good prospect and was included in a couple of reasonably high profile trades that saw him go to the Astros in 2010 (part of a package for Roy Oswalt), the Blues Jays later that season (straight up for OF Brett Wallace), and the Tigers in 2014 (straight up for IF Devon Travis).
Gose would ultimately spend five seasons in the majors, from 2012-2016, but never found regular playing time. In his last two seasons in the majors, he hit .247/.315/.363. So in 2016, he decided to trade in the bat for a pitching rubber. And it’s going well.
Gose is on the shortlist of relievers that the Indians might call up at some point this season from the taxi squad in Columbus. In 2019 he had a very nice campaign between High-A and AA, striking out 35 over 29 innings. He walked a bunch (29), but with a 100 MPH fastball, you can’t expect perfect control. I like to think that he is the next Rafael Betancourt (remember him? He started off as a shortstop for the Red Sox before becoming an ace reliever for the Tribe), but we will see.
