Brad Hand was traded by the Padres to the Indians last week. The Indians needed the pen help, so the price–losing their #1 prospect Fransisco Mejia–was worth it.
I asked if anyone had any spare Hand cards, and was able to get all these from people on my message board for a couple bucks. He has a nice autograph.
- Hand was a 2nd round (52nd overall) pick by the Florida Marlins in 2008 out of Chaska High School in Minnesota.
- 2008-2010 rated one of the Marlins best pitching prospects, topping out at #6 in 2010.
- He made the majors in 2011 but struggled to stick with the big league club. Control was an issue.
- In 2014 the Marlins moved him from the rotation to the pen. The good news was it got him to stick with the major league club, be he was still not super effective.
- In early 2016 he was selected off waivers from the Marlins by the Padres.
- And that is when Hand finally corrected what many analysts thought was holding him back: command. And with this improved command came dominance.
- 2016-2017 with the Padres Hand went 7-8 with 22 saves and carried a 2.56 ERA/161 ERA+/1.026 WHIP. He was an All-Star in 2017, and in 2018 was recognized as one of the best relievers in the National League (and also earning his 2nd all-star appearance).
