New Arrival: Harold Baines, DH, Oakland Athletics

2016 Topps Archives Harold Baines

Harold Baines is very underappreciated player.

He was a 1st round pick of the White Sox in 1977 and would spend 22 years in the majors. He spent roughly half of his career as a full-time DH, which clearly hurt his legacy. It really shouldn’t, but there will always be a bias against players who don’t field. Unless you are David Ortiz.

That said, the man was a professional hitter. He would retire with a line of .289/.356/.465 and 384 HR–good for an OPS+ of 121 and 38.7 career WAR. He was selected to six All-Star teams, one Silver Slugger and rated Top-20 MVP votes four times. He stayed a very productive hitter until late in his career, illustrated by his All-Star selection in 1999–his 20th season in the game.

Despite being such a great hitter Baines never led the league in any significant offensive category. The only time he led the league in anything was SLG in 1984. That’s something, I guess.

Still, he was a great player and any team would have been lucky to have him.
