Jake Gautreau was drafted by San Diego with the 14th overall pick of the 2001 MLB draft. In his last season at Tulane, he hit .355/.435/.659 with 21 HR and was thought to be one of the better college hitters in the country. Coming into the 2002 season he was one of baseball’s Top 100 prospects and many thought he would have a career similar to Jeff Kent.
But like so many prospects, things never panned out. He spent most of 2002 suffering from ulcerative colitis, and he was never really able to get back into the grove. He slipped down the prospect lists, going from the Padres #8 prospect in 2003 to not ranked by 2005.

Gautreau spent two seasons with the Cleveland AA club, and in 2007 was traded to the New York Mets for a PTBNL. He would retire from affiliate ball the next season.
