When you think about the best pitchers of the 90’s, you think of Greg Maddux, Rogers Clemens, Randy Johnson, and Pedro Martinez, to name a few. But you know who else was really good? Jamie Moyer. When it comes to total WAR (Wins Above Replacement), he ranks 9th during that period. I was thinking about him recently, and then ran accross a signed copy of his book. And I never pass up a nice ballpoint pen signature.

For as good as Moyer was, he does not have many accolades to show for it. From 1996-2009, he won 199 games with a 109 ERA+. He was a two-time 20-game winner and won at least 15 games three times. During his 21-win campaign he was selected to his only All-Star game, though did earn Cy Young votes in three seasons.

Another fun fact. In 2003, the season Moyer won 21 games with the Mariners, he was part of an impressive rotation that included Moyer, Ryan Franklin, Joel Pineiro, Freddy Garcia, and Gil Meche. That group did not have a single player miss a start, which is the first time that any team stuck to only its five-man rotation since 1904.

Moyer was an intriguing player beyond just his stats. One of the reasons he accumulated nearly 50 WAR in his career, aside from being a skilled pitcher, was his remarkable longevity. He holds the record for the oldest player to win an MLB game (49 years old) and had a career spanning 25 seasons across four decades.
