Cleveland Shortstop Juan Benjamin, 19, opened his 2022 season in the Arizona Complex League (ACL). He hit a very impressive .300/.462/.500 with 3 HR. One stat to highlight is that he walked almost as much as he struck out (25:27), which is always a nice surprise in today’s game. These numbers got him a promotion to Low-A Lynchburg. There, he only got 10 at-bats but hit .300 with three walks and two Ks.
By pure numbers alone, Benjamin had a slightly better season than Angel Genao, who was his teammate for most of the season. But Angel Genao is the one that evaluators are tagging as a prospect, while I am not seeing quite so much buzz about Benjamin. This is almost certainly a tools issue. But you have to be, at the very least, intrigued by his stats.
