1991 Fleer baseball was a massive set–720-cards, that was produced en masse during the height of the Junk Wax Era. So, with almost 3 million copies of each card floating around, there is nothing rare about this set. Worse, the set was lacking in any really exciting rookie cards–the best you will get are #553 Jeff Conine, #507 Luis Gonzalez, and #447 Dave Burba. Though, I think the Ken Griffey Jr. card in the set is very attractive and a card that, if I ever get the chance to get autographed, would pull the trigger on in a heartbeat.
Finally, the black and yellow design with divisive with collectors, and not everyone loves it. The people that don’t are wrong, of course.
For me though, this set came out when I was nine and I have fond memories, during one Easter party, of ripping open pack after pack with my cousin, trading him whatever he wanted so I could get all the Indians. And I don’t care what anyone says, I love the design. It’s probably nostalgia, but much like being a Cleveland fan in general, sometimes you follow your heart, even if it does not have great taste.
The Cleveland set, much like the rest of the checklist, is not particularly exciting. Though it is fun to see some names–Albert Belle, Carlos Baerga, Charles Nagy–that were the building blocks of the mid-90s powerhouse that was to come. For my site, I am posting the checklist and key cards. If you really want to know what Kevin Bearse‘s card looks like, you can just hop online and take a peek.
